Who (or What) Is An Example of Hyper-Calvinism?

February 21, 2006 by Jeff

One of the things that itches my mind the most when reading the back-and-forth over Calvinism (example) is “Where can I find a hyper-Calvinist?”

The question might sound absurd but really, inquiring minds need to know.

Generally speaking, when a non-Calvinist (or anti-Calvinist, which ever) tries to delineate their oposition to Calvinistic soteriology it is most common for a member of the Calvinist camp to say something along the lines of “You aren’t talking about Calvinism, you are talking about Hyper-Calvinism.” From their it usually switches to a questioning of (a) whether or not the non-Calvinist even understands Calvinism or (b) the Calvinist joins the non-Calvinist in flogging the Hyper-Calvinist.

I post that to give context for my question.

So, back to that question, who (or what) is an example of hyper-Calvinism? I’m particularly interested in contemporary examples. Names, books, websites – all of that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Evan – I edited this so it wouldn’t bleed over. I hope that is alright.

Jeff, if you will scroll up on the Founder’s thread, you will notice that there is a link posted to Phil Johnson’s Primer on Hyper-Calvinism. Additionally, in relation to the history of Hyper-Calvinism v. Evangelistic Calvinism I would suggest you read Leo McBeth’s “The Baptist Heritage” Chapter 6 — “Particular Baptists in England.” Also, there are Hyper-Cavinists in existance today. Fred Phelps of “God Hates Fags” is one. And you can find them on the site http://www.outsidethecamp.org. If you go there, check out the “Heterodoxy Hall of Fame.” Even John Calvin and Loraine Boettner aren’t reformed enough to stay off that list. Hope this helps.

    Jeff,

Here is more than enough on Hyper-Calvinism to keep you busy for years… O and let it be known that a Full 5-Point Calvinist is NOT a Hyper-Calvinist… Not even close!

    Anyway enjoy the reading :-)

Alford, I took the link you posted and made the words “Hyper-Calvinism” the link because it bled out of the comment area. I hope that is alright.

Gotcha. Thanks for the news. :D

I say that because I’m with you already on that one.

    Jeff,

Since others have given references about hyper-Calvinism, let me address something else.

I think we need to be careful not to get too caught up with terminology (Arminian, Calvinist, Hyper-Calvinist, etc.). While these can be very helpful shorthand for a position, they can be a great source of confusion as well.

A good example of this is when someone calls John Piper a hyper-Calvinist. I always ask the person what they mean by this. If they say he is one of those guys who really thinks the five-points of Calvinism is important, then I will freely admit that John Piper is a hyper-Calvinist. However, the term does have some historical baggage with it. If that is what they mean, then I can affirm that John Piper is not a hyper-Calvinist. In the end, what really matters is not necessarily the label, but what is “meant” by the label.

    Rhirhok,

I couldn’t agree more. In fact, that is precisely why I put this post up, particularly the part about contemporary examples of hyper-calvinism.

The more I read discussion about Calvinism the more I conclude that the two sides don’t reference the same thing when using the term “Hyper-Calvinist.”

I thought that perhaps a few examples of what each side considered hyper-calvinism might be useful as a reference point when attempting to define the terms. I was hoping this post might be a forum (albeit a small one) by which to begin that process.

    Jeff,

I have never really met a hyper-Calvinist. I went so far several years ago to start an email list called InSearchofHyperCalvinism. I have yet to meet one. However, I have read a lot of accusations of ‘hyper-calvinism’ by those who ‘agree’ with all five points of Calvinism and accuse others of being ‘hyper-Calvinist’ in order that they may themselves appear to be protectors of orthodoxy and thus obtain flocks and reputations.

Some accusations of hyper-calvinistic activity/doctrine by those who arminian/free willers are as follows:

*any one who says that God doesn’t ‘offer’ His gospel is a hyper-Calvinist (anti-Christ through Phil Johnson, etc..)

    * based on the above, the arminian defines hyper-calvinist to be anyone who says there is no need (or implicitly teaches…i.e. a logical conclusion of their doctrine would be that there is no need or command ..) for evangelism. I.E. any who refuse to ‘offer’ Jesus to whoever will buy Him as if He could be bought by ‘choice’.

Those two widgets are at the heart of the hyper-Calvinism false accusation by anti-Christ to this hour.

The arminian/free willer/anti-Christ says that God ‘offers’ His gospel. Implicit in that ‘offer’ lie is that otherwise, the ‘free’ will is ‘forced’. I.E. The arminian says that God is NOT His Word and implies that God ‘uses language’ to give men ‘holy info’ that they must activate themselves …somehow.

Jesus Christ is plainly the Word of God and we are plainly and expressly born again by hearing Him as Word.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life.

James 1:18 According to His own will begat He us by the word of truth, that we should be a certain first-fruits of His creatures.

1 Peter 1:23-25 being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the living and abiding word of God. Because all flesh is as grass, and all its glory as the flower of grass. The grass has withered and its flower has fallen; but the word of the Lord abides for eternity. But this is the word which in the glad tidings is preached to you.

1 Corinthians 4:15 For if ye should have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet not many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the glad tidings.

Psalm 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light, giving understanding unto the simple.

    ——————-

The arminian speaks in the speech of this world, the non-creating, powerless speech he grew up in. He assumes there is no other speech in total reality and that men ‘debate’ within that one speech in order to ‘find truth’ –such as “what is hyper-Calvinism?”. Yet God is His Word and creates by act of Speech, to include us as new creations in Jesus Christ.

John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

The arminians would have us deceived they ‘agree’ with God –even to the point of ‘agreeing’ to be five point Calvinist. Yet their lie of ‘agree’ is a belligerence against God in that they deny God is His Word and pretend to have heard mere holy info they must check out with something other than God himself –their own mind. They are witness against themselves that they have not the mind of Christ.

The lie of ‘gospel offer’ is expressly a device of Satan to make it seem that there is only one speech in total reality and that the will of the creature is somehow sacrosanct even to God. Very clearly we as new creations in Jesus Christ became new creations by hearing God/Christ Jesus/Creating Speech. We are genine new creations now, in this world in corrupt bodies but we have: new heart, new spirit, new will, mind of Christ, saved soul and God dwelling in us.

Ezekiel 36:25 -27 And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your uncleannesses and from all your idols will I cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and keep mine ordinances, and ye shall do them.

The arminians have the phrase ‘new birth’ and ‘regeneration’ as alternate literals of God’s Word in order that they may seem to be speaking Calvinism and ‘reformed’ one moment and yet deny any real distinction between the new creature and the old the next.

The will of the old creature could do nothing to resist God or even know about God’s truth in order to supposedly choose it. God expressly says this:

1 Corinthian 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The will of the new creation in Jesus Christ had nothing to do with thier own creation as they and their new will didn’t exist yet before they existed. That is so plain it is redundant to say it. Yet the free willer makes a regular life out of not understanding it. Therein is the difference between us.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

So wicked is the non-creating speech of the free willer that it continually pretends that a man must go about and speak what they call the ‘gospel’ which births none but is by their own admission mere ‘info’ they say is the ‘holy directions’ commanded by God to be spoken to all as the command to evangelize. What new creation? What Word of God? If one does not speak their lie of ‘gospel': bingo –accusation of ‘hyper-Calvinism’ for ‘failing to preach the necessity of preaching the gospel’. Satan tries to force his speech in our mouth as the ‘gospel’ and tries to accuse us into it just to escape his accusations. But Satan will never form the path of our speech or be any part of us as new creation in Jesus Christ.

God plainly says He will speak through us and that we are not God, but new creation in which He dwells. He speaks what He wants to when He wants to Speak it.

Matthews 10:20 For ye are not the speakers, but the Spirit of your Father which speaks in you.

But anti-Christ through the free willers constantly ‘preaches’ their false gospel. They appear to be very busy at all times ‘evangelizing’ like busy beavers. But they speak a false gospel: non-creating speech of sin. So no matter what they say, they do not even once comply with the command to evangelize.

God very plainly says He will accomplish all through us: as Word and Spirit. The free willer wants to run out and ‘do’ as if they could control God as Word and were ‘responsible’ because of their supposed ability. Not only do they deny Christ as He really is, but loath His true servants.

God will do as He does through us while we are day and night accused by Satan through his deceived ones that we are less vigourous in the pursuit of ‘gospel’ than they and are thus supposedly ‘guilty’. But God is not mocked nor His Word thwarted even once by their lies:

Phil 2:13 for it is God who works in you both the willing and the working according to his good pleasure.

Job 23:12-17 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have laid up the words of his mouth more than the purpose of my own heart. But he is in one mind , and who can turn him? And what his soul desireth, that will he do. For he will perform what is appointed for me; and many such things are with him. Therefore am I troubled at his presence; I consider, and I am afraid of him. For *God hath made my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me; Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he hidden the gloom from me.

    ——————–

There are two speaks in total reality: God IS His Word, He created non-creating speech/anti-Christ for His own purposes. The accusation of ‘hyper-calvinism’ is always thrown by those who only know non-creating speech and the ‘logic’ therein.

1 John 4:4-6 Ye are of God, children, and have overcome them, because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. They are of the world; for this reason they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God; he that knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

God says those who cannot hear Him as Word and continually equate Him as Word with the same speech of this world, which is anti-Christ, are sons of Satan, not merely mis-educated persons or those with ‘bad theology':

John 8:43-47 Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of the devil, as your father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father: and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me. Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear them not, because ye are not of God.

The Pharisees were the free willers/arminians of their day. They were not and are not ‘brothers in Christ who have a different take on the same gospel’. They preach a false gospel outright.

John 9:39-41 And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind. And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also? Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen
